Russia continues to use “Shaheds” with anti-tank mines in attacks on Ukraine
Russian forces are equipping Shahed-type drones with anti-tank magnetic mines, dropping them on Ukrainian territory, military specialist Serhiy Beskresnov stated. This is part of the massive attack tactics used by the occupiers.
Serhiy Beskresnov, head of the Radio Technology Center, shared in an interview with LIGA.net that the tactic of massive raids is an important component of the Russian military strategy. Drones are being actively used by the occupiers, concentrating around a specific city or object to breach Ukrainian air defenses. The expert also noted that such drones fly in complex trajectories to complicate the defenders’ efforts.
According to Beskresnov, “Shaheds” have already been noticed with mounted anti-tank mines in the fall, most often in the Sumy region. This indicates that the Russians are trying to invent new ways to use drones in the war against Ukraine.
Analysts note that such tactics have not only military but also political significance. This could influence strategic decisions regarding the strengthening of Ukraine’s defense and support from Western allies.
Interestingly, by October 21, Ukrainian forces destroyed approximately 1000 “Shaheds,” each costing about $70,000, which means a total loss for Russia of $70 million. Western countries, in turn, are also stepping up their development of drones, which can be effective means of countering this threat.
