Russian Su-30SM Fighter Jet Shot Down in Crimea Due to “Friendly Fire”

On the night of October 17, Russian forces shot down their own fighter jet over temporarily occupied Crimea. According to the Ukrainian Navy, the aircraft crashed as a result of “friendly fire” during countermeasures against Ukrainian drone attacks.

The incident occurred over the northwestern part of Crimea. The Russian side officially confirmed the downing of the Su-30SM fighter jet, indicating that the crew ejected in time and survived. Meanwhile, Ukrainian Navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk stated on “Apostrophe TV” that Russian forces activated air defense systems during the Ukrainian drone attacks, leading to the mistaken strike on their own aircraft.

Explosions were also heard in Crimea on the night of October 17, as reported by local sources; according to the occupation authorities, several infrastructure facilities were damaged, including power substations and oil depots. This incident highlights the tense situation on the peninsula and the risks for Russian forces in the context of the conflict with Ukraine.
