Experts warn about the risks of the “family reunification” clause in the US peace plan for Ukraine
Specialists are concerned about potential issues related to the implementation of the “family reunification” clause proposed in the US peace plan for Ukraine.
The head of the Media Initiative for Human Rights, Tetyana Katrychenko, and legal advisor of Amnesty International Ukraine, Suleyman Mamutov, raised concerns about the possible consequences of implementing this clause. The main concern is the lack of a clear definition of the term “family” in international law and how it might be used by Russia in the conflict with Ukraine.
Mamutov emphasized that under international law, the concept of “family” is not limited to direct family ties but encompasses all stable familial or social ties disrupted by war. This creates legal uncertainty that could be used as a political tool for manipulations.
According to LIGA.net, the discussion of the humanitarian issue is crucial since many Ukrainian families have been separated due to the armed conflict. It is known that Russia has taken at least 20,000 children from Ukraine, of which only 1,400 have been returned. Currently, about 1.6 million Ukrainian children are living in temporarily occupied territories.
