Dossiers on Deputies and Investigative Journalists Found in “Midas” Case
The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) discovered that suspects in the corruption case within the Energoatom structure systematically collected information on law enforcement officers, deputies, ministers, and journalists.
According to Oleksandr Abakumov, head of the NABU detective unit, those involved monitored the activities of bureau employees, tracking their movements around Kyiv using the “Safe City” database. They possessed data on the residential addresses of detectives, their relatives, and children.
Abakumov noted that 527 reports on influential people in the state have been seized, including 15 NABU detectives, 16 members of parliament, among whom are Anastasia Radina and Yaroslav Zheleznyak, 18 ministers and their deputies, 9 employees of the Security Service of Ukraine, as well as 10 journalists investigating corruption, such as Yuriy Nikolov and the late Oleksiy Shalaysky.
The dossiers also contained data on experts from the Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Sciences and the Institute of Forensic Examinations named after Bokarius. According to Abakumov, this allowed for the possibility of exerting influence on them.
NABU Director Semen Kryvonos suggested that the facts presented might interest the Security Service of Ukraine, as potential obstructions by SBU officers could have been part of the scheme. NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP) stated that the operation to uncover the corruption activity lasted 15 months and involved the surveillance of approximately 1,000 hours of audio recordings.
The damages from the corruption scheme reached $100 million. All suspects in the “Midas” case have been detained, but bail was posted for two of them, and they remained under house arrest. Despite this, two suspects, Myndych and Tsukerman, have been declared wanted.
