European leaders discuss support for Ukraine following Zelensky’s talks with Trump
After Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s meeting with Donald Trump in Washington, European leaders discussed further steps for cooperation and support for Kyiv. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the need for a peace plan for Ukraine.
Following conversations with Volodymyr Zelensky and other European leaders, Merz announced increased support for Ukraine from Europe, as reported by Deutsche Welle, citing German government representative Stefan Cornelius. European leaders intend to strengthen sanctions on Russia and activate the use of frozen Russian assets to achieve peaceful agreements.
The meeting in Washington highlighted the importance of coordination between the USA and Europe. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, in his proposal, emphasized that a peace plan for Ukraine could be based on the model used by the USA for the Gaza Strip. Zelensky, in turn, underscores the need for security guarantees from the USA as the only country with direct contact with Russia.
Despite assurances of full support from Germany and other European countries, the details of the proposed “peace plan” remain unknown. During the call, topics such as air defense and the mechanism for purchasing American PURL weapons for Ukraine were also discussed, underscoring the importance of strengthening the country’s defense capabilities.
