How Soviet Propaganda Hid the Truth About the Holodomor
The Holodomor in Ukraine was a tragedy for millions, but the Soviet authorities successfully concealed the truth about this genocide through propaganda and censorship. Viktor Kapranov, a writer and publisher, talks about these methods on the YouTube channel “In the Name of T.G. Shevchenko”.
One of the methods of concealing the truth was the state’s monopoly on information, including the fact that even photography was prohibited without the permission of the secret police. At a time when the Ukrainian people were experiencing three waves of the Holodomor, the state actively controlled the informational space, preventing the dissemination of the truth. According to Kapranov, the Soviet authorities resorted to numerous tricks and even received support from some Western journalists and politicians who helped to keep the realities of the Holodomor silent.
These actions of the Soviet leaders had far-reaching consequences, leaving grief and catastrophic consequences for the Ukrainian people. At the same time, the stories of people who did not succumb to the pressure of the authorities and refused to carry out their criminal orders preserve the truth about those events. According to Vitaliy Kapranov, his grandfather was excluded from the Communist Party for refusing to dispossess “middle peasants,” and these stories are now an important part of the memory of the Holodomor.
