Gas purchases from Russia in the EU have decreased to a minimum level.

EU countries spent €830 million on Russian gas — the minimum since August 2023.

In September 2025, the European Union spent €830 million on importing Russian gas, which is the lowest figure since August 2023. This was made possible by reducing purchases of both pipeline and liquefied natural gas from Russia.

According to Eurostat data, in September, the EU imported Russian pipeline gas worth 478 million euros. Expenditure on liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia amounted to 352 million euros, which is the lowest level in recent months. The only active route for delivering Russian pipeline gas to Europe remains the TurkStream pipeline.

Amid the reduction of imports from Russia, the EU continues to implement a plan for the phased withdrawal from this country’s oil and gas resources. By the decision of the EU member states’ ambassadors, it is planned to completely stop the import of Russian oil and gas by 2028. Meanwhile, the USA has declared readiness to quickly replace Russian gas and oil by supplying alternative resources.

Experts note that such changes in trade policy could promote the diversification of energy supply sources for Europe, reducing dependence on a single country. The reduction in spending on Russian gas has also affected the overall decrease in gas prices in the EU, which have reached a three-month low.
