In the Mykolaiv region, two employees of a defense plant were detained on suspicion of spying for Russia
The Security Service of Ukraine detained a laboratory assistant and a locksmith at a defense enterprise in the Mykolaiv region, suspected of collaborating with Russian intelligence. They were charged with treason for passing on data about geolocations, site security, and types of defense orders.
According to the SBU, the suspects acted autonomously, without connections to each other, but both passed on the coordinates of production workshops and security information to the Russian intelligence service. Additionally, they helped Russian handlers track the aftermath of attacks on Mykolaiv and the movement of Ukrainian troops.
The arrest took place during work shifts, with the charges based on monitoring data of the suspects’ activity in anti-Ukrainian groups on social media. Mobile devices with media files and coordinates of defense objects were seized during searches.
Both suspects have been notified of suspicion of treason. They are being held in custody without the possibility of bail, and they could face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
This case is another in a series of the SBU’s counteractions to manifestations of Russian agents’ activities in the region. For instance, there were recent reports of suspicion against Russian colonels who attacked Uman, and the detention in Kherson of a former guard of a Russian torture facility.
