Russian drone attacks on border areas of Ukraine: threat to infrastructure and security
Russia has intensified drone attacks on the border areas of Sumy and Chernihiv regions, aiming to destroy key infrastructure and complicate Ukraine’s logistics. These attacks are also accompanied by actions of enemy sabotage and reconnaissance groups.
According to Serhiy Beskresnyi, head of the Center for Radio Technologies, Russia uses short-range drones, including FPVs, to attack strategic targets deep within the territory at distances of up to 40-50 km. The main objective is to disable information infrastructure, including mobile communication towers, which are critically important for both military and civilians. “In the border zone, many people do not have access to alternatives such as Starlink,” the expert notes.
The second goal is to destroy logistical routes, so the attacks are directed at railway locomotives and motor transport. The destruction of infrastructure is aimed at making life in these regions as uncomfortable as possible, particularly by attacking transformers to leave them without heat and electricity. “Recently, attacks have even targeted warehouses and agricultural facilities, forcing people to leave their homes,” added the military specialist.
In recent weeks, the situation has significantly worsened. On September 18, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported an increase in attacks on mobile communication towers. The October 4 attack affected two trains in Shostka, injuring about 30 people. On October 13, there were reports of significant damage to Sumyoblenergo facilities, and on October 30, an attack on the TV tower in the center of Chernihiv.
These events demonstrate a prolonged threat to residents of the border regions. Systematic attacks can have serious economic and social consequences, as infrastructure destruction requires significant resources for recovery, complicating the everyday life of citizens.
