Strike on Substation in Russia: Response to Attacks on Ukraine’s Energy Sector
On the night of October 18, there was a drone attack on the “Veshkayma” substation in the Ulyanovsk region of Russia. Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Counteracting Disinformation, announced the loss of the facility, linking it to previous strikes by Russian forces on Ukraine’s energy sector.
The strike caused significant damage to the energy system, as the “Veshkayma” substation served as an important transit hub connecting the Ulyanovsk, Mordovia, Chuvashia, and Samara regions. This facility was used for supplying electricity from the Syzran and Zhiguli hydroelectric power plants to central regions of Russia.
The Russian Regional Management Center in the Ulyanovsk region confirmed the attack, reporting two explosions following the impact of four drones. According to official data, the fire was contained, and the substation is reportedly operating in normal mode again.
In the context of this event, Andriy Kovalenko emphasized that this incident is a response to the strikes on energy facilities in Ukraine. The losses to the Russian energy system could have a significant impact on regional electricity supply, potentially causing disruptions.
Experts believe that further escalation of military actions in the energy sector could lead to more extensive disruptions in both Russia and Ukraine. These acts could have serious consequences for the energy security of both countries.
