Ukraine continues to enhance energy security through expanded cooperation with Westinghouse

Ukraine plans to implement an 18-month fuel cycle and increase the capacity of power units as part of expanded cooperation with the American company Westinghouse. This step is of strategic importance for the stability of the country’s energy system.

A Ukrainian delegation, which included specialists from Rivne NPP led by General Director Taras Tkach, visited Westinghouse’s manufacturing facilities in Sweden to familiarize themselves with the process of nuclear fuel production. The visit was necessitated by the need to inspect the execution of the contract for fuel supply for Rivne NPP reactors, as well as to strengthen cooperation, which will help reduce dependence on Russian nuclear fuel.

It is planned that Rivne NPP, which has VVER-440 type reactors, will introduce a new, extended fuel cycle. Taras Tkach noted that this decision is particularly relevant in conditions of electricity shortages and will enable an increase in the capacity of power units.

Currently, Westinghouse nuclear fuel is already partially or fully used in all power units of Rivne NPP. The future implementation of the 18-month fuel cycle and the increase in power unit capacity will contribute to the sustainable development of Ukraine’s energy system and meet the country’s economic needs.
