President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky agrees to key points of the peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump, but sets his own conditions that take into account Ukrainian interests. This is reported by The Wall Street Journal.
According to the information, Zelensky agreed to hold elections in Ukraine if the United States ensures a ceasefire. There is also a discussion about maintaining some involvement of Russia in the management of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, but only under the control of Kyiv and Washington. Regarding the demilitarization of the nuclear power plant, not everything was clearly defined, which gave Zelensky grounds for modifying the provisions.
Zelensky also agrees to limit the number of Ukrainian Defense Forces, provided it remains at the current level. The trigger for changes in position is the possibility of supporting Trump’s vision without diminishing political support in Ukraine. During talks with European leaders, the Ukrainian president formulated conditions so as not to alienate the USA.
In the matters of Donbas, Zelensky demands oversight and justice in finding a way to end the war. Although the complete exclusion of the creation of a so-called “buffer zone” was not made, he requested more detailed information on its possible format.
On December 11, the Financial Times reported that the US proposed a peace plan under which Russia is not required to withdraw troops from the demilitarized zone, while Ukraine must do so. This compromise raised doubts for the Ukrainian president.
