Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the necessity of a fair and effective peace plan that would prevent a new Russian invasion, despite the lack of an official US response to recent proposals.
During a press briefing, Zelensky confirmed that he has not yet received full signals from the US regarding the latest amendments to the peace plan; however, he expects dialogue to begin today. Important negotiations will take place on December 14 in Berlin, where the president will meet with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and other European leaders.
The president emphasized that the plan will not be universally acceptable, as it considers numerous compromises among different versions. In his view, the main thing is to ensure justice for Ukraine, as it was Russia that started the war. The key task of the plan is to be an important step towards ending the war and ensure that Russia cannot start a third aggression against Ukraine.
Earlier, on December 11, FT reported that the US offered an option where Russia could remain in a demilitarized zone in Donbas, while Ukraine would have to withdraw its troops. This compromise raised doubts with Zelensky. On December 13, Axios reported statements related to Trump’s readiness to provide Ukraine with security guarantees similar to those given to NATO members.
