Zelensky Calls on the US for Security Guarantees Post-War
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the need for security guarantees from the United States to prevent new aggression from Russia after the conflict ends. He made this statement during a briefing following talks at the White House.
After meeting with American President Donald Trump, Zelensky noted that the US remains the only country capable of effectively discussing security matters with Russia. “Only President Trump has a dialogue with Russia, and this is critically important for Ukraine,” the president stated. He expressed concern that even after the war ends, Ukraine might require strong security guarantees to prevent new aggression from Vladimir Putin.
Zelensky also emphasized that European countries have nearly reached an agreement regarding security guarantees for Ukraine. These issues were discussed during recent phone conversations with European partners after the meeting with Trump. Topics included air defense and the PURL mechanism for purchasing American weapons.
During the briefing, the Ukrainian President supported Trump’s position on ending the war, but emphasized the importance of addressing issues from the Russian side. The discussion also touched upon the supply of Tomahawk long-range missiles. Zelensky highlighted that Ukraine’s need for these missiles is pressing, despite Trump’s current lack of intention to supply them.
