Turkey begins hydrocarbon exploration off the coast of Somalia

Somali military supports Turkish drilling vessel in search of hydrocarbons

The Turkish drilling vessel Çağrı Bey, conducting exploration work near the coast of Somalia, is accompanied by the Somali maritime task force to ensure security. This was reported by the Turkish Ministry of National Defense.

The drilling vessel Çağrı Bey is engaged in activities to discover hydrocarbon deposits in the waters near Somalia, simultaneously escorted by the support ships Korkut, Altan, and Sancar. The Turkish side coordinates its efforts with local military forces, which plays a key role in ensuring the safe conduct of the operation.

As part of this mission, cadets from the Somali Military Schools Command also underwent “basic practical naval training.” This may indicate an increasing level of cooperation between Turkey and Somalia in military training and maritime border security.

Despite the geopolitical situation in the region remaining complex, such cooperation could enhance stability and ensure more efficient use of resources. Experts believe that in the future, this may contribute to increased hydrocarbon extraction, an important resource for the economic development of the countries.
