The proposed number of 800,000 military personnel includes only the Armed Forces of Ukraine – Zelenskyy

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced his intention to maintain the strength of the Armed Forces of Ukraine at 800,000 troops after a ceasefire is reached with Russia.

During a meeting with partners, the possibilities of financing such a large army were discussed. Zelensky emphasized that it would be difficult for Ukraine to independently finance its armed forces without international support. The president believes that maintaining a large army is an important component of the country’s security. At the same time, Ukraine plans to transition to self-financing military expenses after a certain period when the economy stabilizes. Until then, partner support is needed.

The army’s strength of 800,000 is current and reflected in the new version of the peace plan. Previously, American partners proposed reducing the army’s size to 600,000 troops and relinquishing control over Donbas. Zelensky did not agree to such conditions, indicating the importance of a strong defense.

Analysts believe that the decision to maintain such a large army is part of a broader strategy to ensure regional security and may serve as a signal to potential aggressors. However, financial challenges remain, and the success of this initiative will largely depend on international support.

Analysis Factor Details
Army Size 800,000 troops
Financing Insufficient own resources, requires international support
Peace Plan Maintain control over Donbas, not to reduce armed forces
International Reaction Support from partners expected
