Slovakia plans to diversify its gas imports thanks to a contract with Azerbaijan
Slovakia is considering the possibility of signing a long-term contract with Azerbaijan for the supply of natural gas, aiming to reduce its dependence on Russian gas.
Slovak Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Environment, Tomáš Taraba, stated that his country is ready to cooperate with Azerbaijan, which is seen as a reliable partner in the energy sector. The parties are discussing the possibility of signing a gas supply contract for a period of 10 years. Last year, Azerbaijan already started supplying gas to Slovakia as part of a pilot project, although the details of the agreement remain undisclosed.
The main challenge for implementing such a contract is the logistics of transporting gas from the Caucasus to Central Europe. Negotiations are underway regarding the use of existing pipelines and possible supply volumes. The minister expressed gratitude to Azerbaijan for its support during challenging periods when there were disruptions in the import of Russian gas.
Contextually, Slovakia and Hungary remain among the last EU countries to continue purchasing Russian gas. After the transit through Ukraine was stopped, supplies are made via the Turkish Stream. In December last year, both countries announced their intention to sue the EU over restrictions on Russian energy resources.
| Country | Main gas supplier | Diversification plans |
|---|---|---|
| Slovakia | Russia | Long-term contract with Azerbaijan |
| Hungary | Russia | Transit via Turkish Stream |
