How to Win a War of Attrition: Our Retreat Strategy

New Format in LIGA.net: Speakers’ Opinions in Their Own Voice

LIGA.net has announced a new column format called “opinions,” where speakers express their thoughts in their own voice, rather than using artificial intelligence. One of the first pieces in this format was a commentary by journalist Pavlo Kazarin.

In his comment, Pavlo Kazarin emphasized that in the context of the war with Russia, which significantly exceeds Ukraine in numbers, the decisive factor is the ratio of losses. He noted the optimistic sentiments of 2022 in society, which led to unrealistic expectations. Kazarin compared the situation to the biblical story, where Ukraine plays the role of David, and Russia is Goliath.

According to Kazarin, although Russia may advance 10 kilometers daily, this is not critical in terms of the whole country. The key is the loss ratio: if it stands at 1 to 2 in favor of Ukraine, there is cause for concern. However, if the ratio reaches 1 to 5 or 1 to 10, it may indicate the gradual depletion of Russian resources. Russia is large, but not infinite, added Kazarin.

Loss Ratio Significance
1 to 2 Cause for concern
1 to 5 Likelihood of opponent’s exhaustion
1 to 10 Gradual depletion of Russia
