Greece will start supplying gas to Ukraine from January 2026 – agreement signed

Ukraine signed an agreement with Greece on gas import for 2025

Ukraine and Greece signed an agreement on the supply of liquefied natural gas, which will begin in January 2026. This was announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky during a visit to Athens.

Volodymyr Zelensky noted that gas import will be part of measures to compensate for losses due to the destruction of Ukraine’s gas extraction infrastructure caused by Russia’s aggression. He emphasized that the agreements with Greece are part of a large-scale energy package designed to provide Ukraine with energy resources during the winter period.

Within the framework of the agreement, DEPA Trading and Naftogaz signed an agreement on the supply of American liquefied natural gas, which will take place through Greece to Ukraine from December 2025 to March 2026. This step will allow Ukraine to access various reliable energy sources through a vertical corridor connecting Greece and Ukraine.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of energy security in the relations between the two countries, noting that the new infrastructure, particularly the axis line from Alexandroupolis to Odesa, plays a key role in this process.

Importantly, the United States also plays a significant role in this project by granting permission for gas supplies through Greece. Zelensky expressed gratitude to American energy companies and former President Donald Trump for supporting Ukraine in securing energy resources. This allows Ukraine to access American liquefied natural gas through Greek terminals.

Previously, Volodymyr Zelensky had stated the necessity of purchasing gas worth approximately 2 billion euros to ensure stability in Ukraine during the winter season. Agreements with Greece have already been made, and negotiations are ongoing with other countries, with partners promising to provide financial support.
