Demand for firewood in Ukraine set a new record

The demand for firewood in Ukraine has reached record levels since the beginning of the year, doubling last year’s purchasing volumes.

The state enterprise “Forests of Ukraine” reports a significant increase in demand for firewood among the population. In the first months of the year, Ukrainians purchased about 1.1 million cubic meters of firewood, nearly double the figures for the same period last year, when 534,000 cubic meters were sold. Only on average, 225,000 cubic meters of fuelwood are sold per month, previously noted only during peak heating seasons.

Experts note that such a purchasing dynamic can be explained by the growing needs of the population for energy resources against the backdrop of reduced availability of other types of fuel. Previously, the government imposed a ban on the export of fuelwood to ensure that the population has access to the necessary resources. According to forecasts, firewood consumption volumes by the end of the year may exceed 3 million cubic meters, which will be a record since the establishment of the “Forests of Ukraine” enterprise.

Currently, about 200,000 cubic meters of timber have been stockpiled, and the enterprise plans to prepare another 2 million cubic meters by the end of the year to meet the growing demand. The “Forests of Ukraine” system consists of 1,340 forestry units, maintaining stable reserves.

The cost of firewood remains stable: 1,400 hryvnias per cubic meter for hardwood species, 100 hryvnias per cubic meter for pine and alder, and 950 hryvnias per cubic meter for spruce, fir, and soft-leaved species.

Species Price per 1 m³ (UAH)
Hardwood species 1400
Pine, alder 100
Spruce, fir, soft-leaved species 950
