Reason for the closure of Landvetter Airport in Sweden – unknown drones

Landvetter Airport in Gothenburg has ceased operations due to the detection of several unknown drones. The police are conducting an investigation, and air traffic is temporarily halted.

On November 6, around 18:00, drones were spotted in the airspace of Landvetter Airport. This compelled the Swedish Civil Aviation Authority to suspend flights, as the airport cannot accommodate incoming and outgoing aircraft. Notably, two flights from Germany were redirected to Copenhagen, and a flight to Munich was canceled.

Police patrols are working on the airport grounds, trying to ascertain the details of the incident. One witness, who was photographing planes, captured a drone in the sky. “I saw a small object with lights, it must have been a drone,” he said.

Swedavia, the company that manages Sweden’s airports, has confirmed that the airspace will remain closed until the police investigation is concluded. Landvetter is an important transport hub in western Sweden.

Drone incidents have already occurred at other European airports in Brussels, Liège, Vilnius, and Berlin this month, prompting the Belgian government to decide to strengthen the National Aviation Security Center.
