Ukraine needs to import more than 4 billion cubic meters of gas additionally by the end of the heating season 2025/2026, informed the Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz, Sergii Koretskyi, at a briefing.

Naftogaz has currently accumulated over 13.2 billion cubic meters of gas in underground storage, which meets government plans. According to Sergii Koretskyi, these volumes were achieved due to the expenditure of about 1 billion dollars of own funds and 1.5 billion dollars of attracted aid from international partners. The need for such an amount of funding arose from the necessity to pay for gas imports caused by Russia’s attack, which significantly affected domestic gas production.

Sergii Koretskyi noted that, despite continuous strikes on infrastructure, Naftogaz continues restoration work. In particular, it was reported that in October, gas production in the Poltava region suffered significant losses. According to the government, gas import volumes are planned to increase by 30% to ensure a stable passage of the heating season.

The need for additional gas imports is related not only to current damages but also to long-term plans for ensuring the country’s energy security amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. Experts point to the high vulnerability of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure to military threats, which increases the relevance of diversifying energy sources and international cooperation.
