Six European Countries Join PURL Program to Support Ukraine
Sweden, Latvia, Estonia, Denmark, Norway, and Slovenia have become new participants in the PURL program for the procurement of American weapons for Ukraine, as announced by Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal.
The PURL program, initiated by the United States in collaboration with NATO, aims to supply critically important weapons to Ukraine through funding by Alliance member states. Denys Shmyhal expressed gratitude to the new participants, noting that this initiative enables Ukraine to be equipped with weapons urgently needed for defense and preserving lives.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that more than half of the alliance’s members have already joined PURL, ensuring a strong flow of support. He also mentioned that the first aid packages were funded by six allies, and by mid-October, more than half of NATO countries had joined the program.
The PURL program involves the purchase of weapons according to a list of Ukraine’s prioritized needs, agreed upon with the United States and NATO. It was reported in September that Ukraine received its first military aid under the PURL program from NATO member countries, and at the end of the month, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the U.S. is approving the fifth and sixth weapon packages.
