The US offers Ukraine security guarantees similar to NATO’s Article 5
The United States of America has offered Ukraine security guarantees akin to those ensured by Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty with the aim of encouraging Kyiv to quickly decide on ending the conflict.
As reported by Politico, citing American officials, during special negotiations in Berlin, the US seeks to pressure Ukraine to agree to the proposed conditions. The Trump administration presents this as the largest and most clear security pledge for Ukraine, accompanied by a condition – to accept it quickly, otherwise, the generosity of the offer will be lost.
The provision of guarantees resembling Article 5 comes amid negotiations between US special envoy Steve Whitcoff, Trump’s advisor Jared Kushner, and Ukrainian and European officials. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and many European leaders are skeptical of the deal without explicit security guarantees from the US due to concerns that Russia may once again engage in aggressive actions.
The proposed guarantees include the creation of a “demilitarized zone” in eastern Ukraine with the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops. After the end of Trump’s presidency, these guarantees would require ratification by Congress, ensuring their implementation in the future.
According to American sources at Axios, the Ukrainian delegation was pleasantly surprised by Trump’s willingness to take such steps. However, to keep these guarantees valid, the decision must be made immediately.
| Stage of negotiations | Contents of agreements | Position of Ukraine |
|---|---|---|
| Guarantees proposal | Analogy with NATO’s Article 5 | Need for a quick decision |
| Creation of a demilitarized zone | Troop withdrawal from Donbas | Fear of renewed aggression |
