China threatens countermeasures against possible EU trade restrictions
China has expressed its readiness to impose countermeasures if the European Union decides to introduce new trade restrictions on Chinese companies. This warning was made on the eve of economic talks between the two blocs.
The Ministry of Commerce of the PRC expressed hope that the EU will adhere to the rules of the World Trade Organization, uphold the principles of free trade and fair competition, and oppose protectionism and unilateral measures. The ministry noted that China and the EU remain key trade partners and are considering the possibility of establishing a consultation mechanism on trade and investment issues.
“We hope that the European side will meet China halfway,” said a representative of the ministry, calling for the resolution of current differences through dialogue and consultations. At the same time, Beijing emphasized its readiness to take decisive measures to protect its interests in response to “discriminatory measures.”
Tensions between the two economic partners are intensifying amid Brussels’ concerns about access to the Chinese market, industrial subsidies, and economic security. In recent months, the likelihood of a trade conflict has increased, as both sides have repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs.
