Hungary blocked the European Union’s enlargement statement, supporting its position against Ukraine
At the last EU meeting this year, Hungary blocked the adoption of the annual statement on enlargement, expressing disapproval of the positive assessment of Ukraine’s efforts towards European integration.
This move by Hungary drew criticism from other member states as 26 out of 27 countries showed strong support for Ukraine. Danish Minister of European Affairs, Marie Bjerre, expressed regret over the inability to reach a consensus, especially when Ukraine is fulfilling its promises on the path to EU integration. Germany’s head of European affairs, Günter Krichbaum, called Hungary’s actions “destructive” and obstructive to the decisions of the entire bloc.
This situation raised concerns within the EU as Hungary’s decision might send the wrong signal to candidate countries for membership. Marie Bjerre emphasized the importance for these states to choose the European Union over Russia and that they deserve to join based on their good results.
Besides the enlargement issue, attendees of the December 16 meeting discussed preparations for the European Council, where a key issue will be ensuring uninterrupted financing for Ukraine, including “reparations loans.” This is a crucial moment for Europe’s security and support for Ukraine. In recent days, it has been revealed that Belgium is blocking plan A for financial assistance to Ukraine from Europe, while Hungary is blocking plan B.
