Ambush in Palmyra: Three Americans Killed, US Promises to Respond
In Palmyra on December 13, two US military personnel and a civilian translator were killed in an ambush by militants of the Islamic State (ISIS). According to information provided by the Pentagon, the Americans were in the region to support counter-terrorism operations.
As a result of the attack, three more American soldiers were injured. The US military was holding a key meeting with local leaders to strengthen the alliance against ISIS. The Pentagon reported that the assailant among the militants was killed by allied forces. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegset stated that anyone daring to commit such actions would be pursued.
US President Donald Trump was immediately informed of the situation and promised a serious response. He noted that the condition of the wounded soldiers was not of concern. Syrian President Ahmed Ash-Shara also condemned the attack and expressed his outrage, promising that Syria would respond severely.
Recently, tensions in the region have increased, as in November, Syria foiled two attempts on President Ash-Shara’s life, and the US conducted a series of airstrikes against ISIS in southern Syria at the beginning of December, destroying a number of militants’ weapon depots.
