Germany will deploy troops for engineering tasks on Poland’s eastern border with Belarus and Russia
From April 2026, Germany will deploy several dozen Bundeswehr personnel to the eastern part of the Polish-Belarusian border to perform engineering tasks as part of the “Eastern Shield” operation. This mission will last until the end of 2027.
The German Ministry of Defense reported that the functions of the personnel are limited to engineering works, such as building fortified positions, digging trenches, installing barbed wire, and constructing anti-tank barriers. Additional tasks are not foreseen at this time. It is important to note that the deployment of German military forces does not require parliamentary approval, as this mission is not considered an armed foreign operation under German law.
The “Eastern Shield” operation began in May 2024 and operates in the border areas of Poland with Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad region. The operation aims to strengthen Poland’s defense as a NATO member against potential threats. In November 2023, Estonia announced similar efforts to strengthen its border with Russia, upgrading its defensive structures.
Providing assistance to Poland in strengthening its borders reflects the expansion of military-technical cooperation within NATO. According to analysts, such support is aimed at increasing stability in the region amid growing areas of risk on Europe’s eastern borders.
