Why it is time for self-determination now: not a war for territories, but a struggle for annihilation

The military conflict between Russia and Ukraine has escalated, focusing attention on the degradation of Russian statehood as a strategic goal.

The Ukrainian-Russian war holds a dualistic character: for Russia, it is a war of annihilation against the Ukrainian nation, while Ukraine has focused on causing irrevocable changes in Russia’s internal and external strategic positions. Analyzing the current situation, there can be a discussion of partial success of this strategy in various directions, particularly in relations with Europe, on strategic markets, and at the project level of the post-Soviet space.

However, key areas remain where significant changes are necessary: strategic armament, relations with the United States, and authority in the Global South. Despite territorial losses, the achievement of the strategic objective remains at the forefront of national policy. Now, the reality on the battlefield becomes more of a tool for influence in political and economic realms. Meanwhile, the main question for states is survival under these conditions.

Experts believe that increased economic sanctions could further weaken Russia, reducing its ability for military aggression. However, the possibility of a peaceful resolution remains unlikely under conditions where neither side is ready for compromise.

Factor Impact on Russia Current State
Economic Sanctions Strong GDP decline Ongoing
Relations with Europe Deterioration of diplomatic ties Deteriorated
Global South Loss of authority Remains
