European gas storage facilities are 71.54% full, below the five-year average

The European Union continues to build up gas reserves ahead of the heating season. At the same time, the level of underground gas storage facilities remains 15.51 percentage points below the average of the past five years.

At the end of the gas day on September 29, natural gas reserves in EU underground storage facilities reached 71.54%, according to Gas Infrastructure Europe data. The European Union’s total active gas storage capacity stands at approximately 109 billion cubic meters.

Over the past seven days, the average net gas injection volume amounted to 201 million cubic meters per day. This is approximately 13% higher than the five-year average.

Current weather conditions are conducive to building up reserves. According to the latest forecast, the average air temperature this week is approximately 6°C above the climate norm for this period.

Meanwhile, wind generation has met an average of about 17% of the region’s electricity demand since the beginning of September. In September 2025, its share stood at 20%, according to WindEurope.

Imports of liquefied natural gas to Europe in September 2026 are expected to amount to around 8.2 million tonnes. This is 6% lower than in the same month last year.

It was previously reported that the European Union had spent an additional €90 billion ($103.9 billion) on fossil fuel imports since the start of the war in Iran.
