The United Kingdom has allocated up to £800,000 for a four-year project to protect Ukrainian cultural heritage damaged as a result of Russian aggression. The project will be implemented by Historic England.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture reported on the expansion of cooperation between Ukraine and the United Kingdom in the fields of culture and the preservation of Ukrainian heritage. Under the Century Partnership, the first meeting of an advisory council was held to coordinate joint cultural projects.
Training and exchanges for specialists
Protecting Ukrainian cultural heritage was identified as one area of cooperation. The programme, for which the United Kingdom has allocated up to £800,000, is designed to run for four years.
It will include training and exchanges for Ukrainian specialists in the protection, preservation and restoration of cultural heritage sites damaged by Russian aggression.
Museum cooperation and cultural exchanges
The parties also discussed a pilot project with the Taras Shevchenko National Museum. Its aim is to develop cooperation between Ukrainian and British museum institutions.
During the meeting, participants separately considered the development of cultural exchanges, digitalisation, cinema, creative industries and the presentation of Ukrainian culture in the United Kingdom.
Century Partnership
The Century Partnership between Ukraine and the United Kingdom was signed by Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Keir Starmer on 16 January 2025. The agreement provides for long-term cooperation, including in the fields of culture and the preservation of Ukrainian heritage.
On 17 September 2025, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the Law of Ukraine ratifying the Century Partnership Agreement.
