US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker expressed optimism about peace talks between Russia and Ukraine but emphasized ongoing Russian shelling that complicates progress.
Whitaker noted in his interview with Fox News that the talks recently held with Ukrainian and Russian representatives were productive and constructive. However, challenges remain as Russia continues its massive night shelling of Ukraine. During the talks, four important documents were discussed, including a 20-point peace plan, security guarantees, economic development, and prosperity once peace is achieved.
The ambassador acknowledged that Russia is willing to suffer losses more than any other country, even with minimal results on the battlefield. He noted that no other state would tolerate such sacrifices except Russia. Meanwhile, negotiation efforts continue, and the US is trying to understand what concessions Russia is willing to make to resolve the conflict.
The talks in Florida, which took place on December 21 with the participation of American and European partners, were assessed as productive. Prepared drafts of documents on security guarantees for Ukraine and recovery were developed.
